Overview

This simple yet powerful feature allows unavailable (86’d) items to remain visible on the menu in a greyed-out state, rather than being removed entirely. It helps create the desired user behavior by keeping customers familiar with the full menu, encouraging them to return for temporarily unavailable items once they’re back.

Prerequisites & Dependencies

  • The client’s menu must be imported, and item availability must be kept up to date

  • The client’s ordering platforms must be live

  • At least one item must be marked as unavailable

Limitations

  • We can not limit presenting out-of-stock for a specific service type. If the filter is enabled, the setting will be applied to all menu items (for the active menus), and for all service types

  • Currently, this feature is available only for a small portion of clients. Please follow announcements to learn when it's going to be available for everyone.

Out-of-stock feature functionality

  • When an item is unavailable, it automatically appears as “grayed out” or marked out of stock on the website and mobile apps. Soon, clients will be able to control this behavior through a setting in the Admin Dashboard. With this setting, they can choose whether to display unavailable items in a grayed-out state or hide them entirely from the menu until they become available in the POS.

  • Unavailable items can still be viewed on the menu, but cannot be added to the cart. The Add to Cart button is removed from the item details page, and the Quick Add to Cart button ( + ) is removed from the menu page.

  • This feature has been implemented for both the web and mobile apps.

Step-by-Step Configuration

To enable the out-of-stock feature,

  1. Log in to the client's Admin dashboard

  2. Select Switch to Old Admin

  3. In the Old Admin, select Settings

  4. Find the menu section, and there will be an enable_out_of_stock_filter

  5. Set filter to True

  6. Select the Update button to save changes

Post-Configuration Verification

  • Confirm that unavailable items appear grayed out

  • Confirm that unavailable items show a price, but do not show the Quick Add to Cart ( + ) button

  • Confirm that unavailable items can be selected for viewing, but not added to the cart

  • Confirm consistent behavior across web, mobile web, iOS, and Android platforms

Here's how the "greyed-out items" look when they are out of stock. Users are not able to select them and add them to the cart. However, they remain visible on the menu page, and

  • Reflects real-time availability: Greyed-out items give users confidence that the menu is up to date

  • Immediate visibility: Users don't need to wonder if something is just hidden, temporarily removed, or coming back soon

  • Signals temporary status: A greyed-out item implies the item normally exists but is just not available right now, helping users understand it may return later

  • Support trust in the brand: It shows attention to detail and a smooth digital ordering experience
